The biggest challenge is getting an appointment at the Foreigners' Office. However, if you present all the required documents on the day of your appointment, your residency will be granted immediately. If any documents are missing, residency will not be issued, but you can return a few days later without needing to schedule a new appointment to complete the process.
Your presence at the appointment at the Foreigners' Office is mandatory. Unlike the NIE number, which can be processed through authorization, residency requires you to appear in person, along with all family members, including minors.
The NIE is solely a tax identification number, necessary for purchasing property, opening bank accounts, or registering vehicles.
Residency, on the other hand, is intended for those whose main residence is in Spain. (Residency includes the NIE number). It is mandatory if you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year.
If you only have an NIE number and are not a resident, your certificate will be a white document in A4 format. If you register as a resident, you will receive a green card-sized document.

If you can provide all the documents required by the Foreigners' Office, you can apply for residency directly.
The required documentation depends on each person’s personal situation (employment contract, self-employed, retiree, or personal wealth). Once you become a resident, you are subject to Spanish tax laws, including income tax, inheritance tax, and other fiscal obligations.
There are very few cases with clear tax benefits. One of them is the possibility of benefiting from the “Beckham Law.” This regulation applies to new residents who meet certain requirements and have a new employment contract in Spain. Under this law, work income of up to €600,000 is taxed at a flat rate of 24% for six years. This is particularly advantageous for individuals earning at least €60,000 annually. The application must be submitted within six months of starting work in Spain.
