Deregistration of vehicles

Vehicles that have reached the end of their useful life and are to be permanently deregistered must be taken to a recycling facility, a scrapyard or a depot. In this case, it is not necessary to inform the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) or your municipality. However, if the vehicle has outstanding taxes or fines, it must be properly deregistered prior to its permanent deregistration.

It is recommended to deregister the vehicle before the end of the year, since the road tax expires on January 1. If the vehicle is still registered in the new year, the fee will be charged again by the municipality. For more information visit management of fines and taxes

If you wish to register the vehicle in another country, you must deregister it definitively, even if it is already registered in another country. The different administrations do not communicate with each other, so the road tax will still be issued if you do not apply for deregistration for transit or export.
