 Why do I need an NIE and what exactly is it?

The abbreviation stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero. It is an identification number for foreigners in Spain. It is valid indefinitely and is not transferable. It also serves as a tax number. In everyday life, you need the NIE for transactions such as buying a house/flat, buying and registering a car, signing an electricity, water or internet contract, paying taxes.

3) If you are not available locally, we can also arrange a NIE for you. For this we need a power of attorney from your home country and take care of everything else (official translation of the power of attorney, dealings with the authorities etc.).

Do I have to become a resident in Spain? The answer is simple: If you spend more than 183 days a year in Spain, you must become a resident (regardless of whether you receive your income from another country).

What tax advantages do I have if I take up tax residence in Spain? Basically there are none. On the contrary, many Spanish regions have a wealth tax. This tax is levied on the assets of private individuals if they exceed €700,000 per person. A foreigner who becomes tax resident in Spain, if he exceeds this limit, has to pay wealth tax not only on his properties in Spain, but also on his properties, assets, investments and bank accounts in his country of origin.
