Insurance Coverage in the Event of Catastrophes

We want to inform and reassure you regarding your insurance coverage for catastrophic events, such as the unfortunate recent disaster in the Valencia region. We understand that situations like this can cause significant uncertainty, and it’s important for you to know about the special protection that exists in Spain through the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros.In every insurance policy, a portion of the premium is allocated to the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros, a public entity.

This contribution helps create a fund that provides protection in the event of extraordinary circumstances. This includes not only floods but also earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, tsunamis, and other major natural events.

Should any of these catastrophes occur, the Consorcio will cover the damages, matching the capital and coverage specified in your policy, which allows you to avoid relying solely on public aid programs.In such an event, the Anke Sevenster team will guide you and handle the claim process on your behalf with the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros.

What to Do If You Have a Claim Eligible for Consortium Coverage

The claim can be reported online or by phone. As mentioned, the Consortium will cover the damage as long as a policy has been taken out with an insurance company in Spain.

When filing a claim, you will need to provide your policy details (policy number and the name of the insurance company). Later, when the Consortium's adjuster arrives, they will request an updated duplicate of your policy and proof of premium payment. If you don’t have these documents yet, we recommend requesting them from your insurance broker as soon as possible.

Additionally, you will be asked for contact information, email, personal details, and your bank account number for the indemnity payment (along with proof that the policyholder is the account owner).

If the claim involves a vehicle, you will need to provide the vehicle's details (model, license plate). The vehicle usually needs to be assessed in a repair shop, so you should indicate the location of the shop.

Afterward, an insurance adjuster assigned by the Consortium will personally assess the damages. In cases of large-scale catastrophes, delays are common, but this does not mean you cannot start with the cleanup and repairs. You should document damages with photos, official invoices for any completed repairs, and repair estimates for damages that are yet to be fixed.

One last tip: the Consortium’s adjuster will also review the conditions of your current policy. It is advisable to insure both the building structure and contents so that both the property and furnishings are covered. They will also check that the insured amounts are adequate, so we recommend that these values match the actual worth of the insured items to avoid underinsurance.
