In Spain, neither the Social Security nor private health insurances guarantee compensation in case of dependency.

For many years there was no protection at all, until 2006, when the Dependency Law was implemented, which established that the autonomous communities are responsible for the implementation of the aid, which can lead to differences in the application of the law depending on the region.

The amount is paid to the dependent person on a monthly basis, and varies according to the autonomous community and the degree of dependency (which is assessed by a medical committee). These are the average pensions for this year in Spain:

• 1.Moderate dependency, grade I = 134.5 € / month.
• 2.Severe dependency, grade II = assistance of 241 € / month
• 3.Severe dependency, grade III = aid of 334 € / month

It is clear that these benefits are insufficient, and that a dependency case in the family can be devastating, both emotionally and financially.
