We are committed to providing you with sufficient and appropriate information. As well as compulsory vaccination and sterilisation, strict monitoring and licensing requirements for breeders, stricter penalties for animal abusers and a new list of animals that will no longer be allowed in Spain to protect local flora and fauna, there is also the issue of proper insurance cover for your pets. The law requires dog owners to take out civil liability insurance for their dogs and to attend a dog training course.

LATEST NEWS 25.09.2023: The dog liability insurance and the obligatory course for dog owners are not yet required by law, as the exact requirements and characteristics for these points have not yet been defined. For these points of the new law to come into force, a separate ordinance with concrete provisions is needed.

Nevertheless, third party liability insurance is not only highly recommended, but is already required by some autonomous and local regulations.

All other animal welfare legislation will come into force on 29.09.2023!

Remember that you will no longer be allowed to leave your dog unleashed or unattended for too long outside the supermarket!
